This beautiful drawing was done in Pembrokeshire shortly before Sutherland’s appointment as an official War Artist. The subject is a specific road and the location is recorded in the artist’s map of the region (see Hayes op cit fig 6).
Hayes describes the drawing as ‘’glowing with colour’’ and the work is a very personal and powerful expression of the artist’s love for the Welsh countryside at the onset of War.
