Description
Although Jamie Wyeth claims he does not have a favorite breed of dog, he owns several Jack Russell terriers such as the one depicted in the present work.
"I just happen to have a lot of Jack Russells. I always hated small dogs and then somebody gave me a Jack Russell, my first. They are well described as big dogs with short legs. They do not have small dog mentality, and so I have them around a lot. So they are models."*
Here, Wyeth depicts the dog sitting – as a human would – in an elaborate wicker chair that allows the artist to display his mastery of texture, pattern, and the effects of outdoor light.
This work is included in the database of the artist's work being compiled by the Wyeth Center at the William A. Farnsworth Museum, Rockland, Maine.
