Jerry Schatzberg

Jerry Schatzberg is an American photographer and filmmaker who helped shape the Hollywood Renaissance of the 1970s. Both his films and his photographs examine the intersections between intimacy and story, exploring the subtleties of human relationships. His work is characterized by its narrative quality, combining action, emotion, and formal patterns to convey a particular meaning. He is best known for his landmark 1971 film The Panic in Needle Park, as well as for his candid shots of Bob Dylan, Roman Polanski, The Rolling Stones, and other celebrities. Born on June 26, 1927 in the Bronx, NY, he went on to attend the University of Miami and work as assistant to the photographer Bill Helburn. Throughout his career, Schatzberg’s images have appeared in international fashion magazines, including Vogue, Esquire, Glamour, and Life. The artist lives and works in New York, NY.
