Josephine Meckseper

(German, born 1964)

Josephine Meckseper is a contemporary German artist whose installations probe the influences of consumer culture on society. Employing appropriated images and objects from advertising and fashion, Meckseper exposes the mechanisms of visual suggestion, as seen in her Pyromaniac 2 (2013). “The shop windows and vitrines in my work reflect the role of the artist in our current consumer society and point to the instability of capitalism and post-Fordian society,” she has explained. “But aside the cultural critique, there is a literary and philosophical approach in my work, a sense of storytelling with objects and capturing life in all its manifestations.” Born in 1964 in Lilienthal, Germany, she grew up in the artist colony of Worpswede, which her ancestor helped found. Meckseper went on to attend the Berlin University of the Arts and later received her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 1992. Studying under the Conceptual artist Michael Asher and living in Los Angeles, she began to produce work reflecting both political and cultural concerns. Meckseper currently lives and works in New York, NY. Today, the artist’s works are held in the collections of the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, among others.
