Description
Named after Moby Dick's main protagonist captain Ahab, this patinated bronze sculpture from 2002 continues Schnabel's artistic engagement with Melville's literary masterpiece that has been inspiring Schnabel works for decades and keeps continiously showing up as a topic in his paitings. Now put into the three-dimensional, the over 6 meter high sculpture has a chalk-white patina, that is reminiscent in its coloring and form to a whalebone Ahab's leg prosthetics is also made out. The pointed tree-like end of the sculpture reminds of a harpune, Ahab uses for whaling. The unique piece is 3 tons heavy and comes in three mountable pieces. It's currently on display in the city center of Dusseldorf, Germany, in front of the Andreas Quartier.
