Vaughan made a series of gouaches of Boxers. Gerard Hastings points out that the artist ‘’was not particularly interested in boxing per se, but it legitimised the subject of the male nude. It gave him a subject with bare limbs and torsos to work with. It is interesting that many of the boxing pictures

depict the pugilist in between bouts, seated and resting rather than fighting. It seems he was interested in the powerful, athletic male body in repose’’.
