Liu Wei

(Chinese, born 1972)

Liu Wei is a contemporary Chinese artist working in many types of media including installation, video, drawing, painting, and sculpture. Some of his projects include the Purple Air (2011–2012) series of oil paintings that depict stylized skyscrapers, and Indigestion II, a model of human excrement made from tar. “It’s a question of finding the most suitable medium. The same content is then being fine-tuned when applying in different mediums,” he has said. Born in 1972 in Beijing, China, he graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou in 1996 and began his career as part of a subversive movement called Post-Sense Sensibility. The group of artists aimed to create extreme experiences for those seeing their work and embraced improvisation, irrationality, and intuition. Liu has gone on to be the subject of several exhibitions in Asia, the United States, and Europe. He continues to live and work in Beijing, China. Today, the artist’s works are held in the collections of the Samsung Museum of Art in Seoul, the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, and the Astrup Fearnley Museet in Oslon, among others.
