Ludwig Bemelmans
(American/Austrian, 1898–1962)
Biography
In 1914, Bemelmans moved to the United States, settling in New York City, where he began work as a busboy at the Ritz-Calrton. Keen to become an artist, he eventually quit his hotel job to work as a full-time cartoonist on various magazines.
In 1934, Bemelmans published his first children's book, Hansi, and in 1939 Madeline was born. The book was an instant success, and he went on to write and illustrate five more stories in the series. His work was distinguished by a charming visual style, which mixed detailed and realistic backgrounds with stylized characters in bright colors.
Apart from his work as a children's author, Bemelmans illustrated magazines including The New Yorker and Town & Country, and he also painted murals for luxury hotels and restaurants, such as the Plaza Hotel and Le Pavillon in NYC.
Bemelmans died on October 1, 1962, in New York City. His illustrations and books continue to captivate readers of all ages, and in 2021, Illustration for 'Madeline and the Bad Hat’ ("Pepito carried a bulging sack") (mixed media on paperboard laid down on board) was sold for $302,400 at auction.
