Description
The term “Cyborg” derives from the combination of
“cyber” and “organism,” and Bunker is precisely
that: a conflation of the mechanical and natural. In
this case, the natural aspect is neither plant nor
animal, but fungal. Fungi are not well understood by
science. They are web-like organisms with
fruiting/fertile bodies that can appear overnight,
seemingly out of nowhere. They have long been
associated with healing, magic, and the surreal.
Interestingly, scientists are now beginning to
understand that the underground networks of these
organisms are actually used to transfer information.
Art historically, this particular work looks to the
tradition of the classical reclining nude, the voluptuous
mid-century formalist sculpture of Henry Moore, and
the feminist work of Louise Bourgeois.
