Patricia Piccinini’s “Cleaner” envisions a creature genetically engineered to solve a life-threatening situation it faces due to human-made pollution in the oceans. Part sea turtle, part mechanical shell with vacuum intakes to suck up plastic waste before it reaches the animal’s mouth, Piccinini presents us with a complex and essentially fruitless solution to a problem, which shifts the responsibility from the people who create the problem to the creatures who are its victims.
