Patrick von Kalckreuth
(German, 1892–1970)
Biography
Patrick von Kalckreuth was a German painter known for his strikingly realistic oil paintings of the North Sea. Born in 1892 to a German naval officer, von Kalckreuth was known prior to 1931 as Patrick Dunbar, until his father's death and his mother's subsequent remarriage. Before enrolling at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, he enjoyed a short profession as a seaman, developing a love for the ocean which would become the basis of his later work. His paintings, originally composed of static forms of beaches and ships interacting with the sea, later shifted to focus on the water itself, with undulating depictions of waves caught mid-crest, devoid of other subject matter. Before his death in 1970, von Kalckreuth was considered a master maritime painter, and his work is held in numerous collections in North Germany.
