Description
The sculpture "Bagaglio Rinoceronte Grande" is a 55-centimeter tall bronze and iron artwork. It depicts a magnificent rhinoceros crushed under variously shaped and sized suitcases. Weary and worn, it appears almost incapable of breathing, as if it has reduced its vital strength to the bare minimum needed to survive. Like all of Bombardieri's animal representations, the crushed rhinoceros symbolizes humanity, overwhelmed by goals, obligations, and responsibilities—a physical-emotional burden impossible to bear. Simultaneously, there's an environmental reference to the brutal practice of hunting rhinos for their horns. Human greed, the cause of the rhino massacre, mirrors the capitalist world's relentless demands on individuals. The rhinoceros is remarkably realistic, deceiving even the most discerning eye. The strong and beautiful contrast between the rhino's vitality and the lifeless materiality of the suitcases, resembling almost like stones, is striking. The luggage's hues give them a weathered appearance reminiscent of rags, ropes, and scraps of leather in the style of Arte Povera.
