Description
IN THE BEGINNING
“ALLEGORY OF THE FALLING ANGEL”
#FallingAngel@FA
In this composition we see one of the Falling Angels balancing on a tightrope.
In this crucial and life-threatening balancing act, he is trying to follow the Middle Path between good and bad, right or wrong, the upper world and the underworld : a thin line to walk !
This angel is quite lucky, as he is born and gifted with still young but strong wings - not enough to fly - but enough to keep his equilibrium in his vital act of life.
In many religions and philosophies, including the
Asian Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, there is a concept of finding the "middle way" or "middle path," which refers to a balanced and moderate approach to life.
The middle way is often seen as a path between two extremes, such as excess and deficiency, pleasure and pain, or attachment and detachment. It is a way of living that avoids the extremes of indulgence and asceticism,
and instead seeks a balanced and harmonious approach that is neither too much nor too little.
He is holding his cross, not only to keep his balance, but also to protect him against bad influences and demons wandering around for new victims. The attentive viewer may notice in the backdrop a large number of "already fallen" angels.
They look so dramatic that they could have been painted by Rubens.
But our protagonist does everything possible in order not to become one of them.
He is pointing upwards, seemingly having a clear idea where he is going. But does he ?
Where will his life journey bring him ?
Will he fall in abyss with other fallen angels, or will he be able to keep his balance in the middle path ? Will our angel in focus be able to recover and raise in the sky or will he become a fallen angel instead ?
Does he have enough resilience or courage to get back on track after a fall or almost fall ? Or does he just let it go ?
In that sense, are we not all Falling Angels in our short and glorious path of life ?
