Published Wilderness: A Quiet Adventure in Alaska, launching his career as both a respected book illustrator and a writer

Cape Dennis (MA) Cinema mural. Largest painting on canvas to date
Moby-Dick published with Kent illustrations. Renews interest in Melville's work, and becomes a landmark in American illustrated books

Duo Postal Service murals mounted in the Benjamin Franklin Library, Washington, DC (sets off prolonged sociopolitical controversy).

1953

Appeared before Senator Joseph McCarthy and Permanent Investigations Subcommittee

Won "Right to Travel" case in the U.S. Supreme Court
