Alan Koppel Gallery is thrilled to present Darkside of the Sun, an exhibition of new work by German artist Anselm Reyle.
Though a contemporary artist, Reyle fuses his art with art historical schools of abstraction dating from the early 20th century. The artist describes his work as "a tightrope walk that can be painful all the way," for he constantly oscillates between the categories of high art and low culture, and questions where these extremes merge.
Recently, Reyle has been exploring the process of painting with his artworks comprised of burlap, crumpled mylar, found objects, and neon placed in plexiglass boxes — forcing the viewer to recognize the simultaneous materiality and freeform elements of the piece. This act results in Reyle juxtaposing intensely vivid with soothingly natural colors to create a contrast between archaic atmospheres and artificiality.
Darkside of the Sun runs through June 3, 2022, at Alan Koppel Gallery, Chicago.
