The title of John Waters’ piece in our exhibition, A Cold Wind..., refers back to the 1961 film, A Cold Wind in August.  It seems appropriate as we move into the height of summer - since  August brings those hot summer nights as well as that occasional cold  wind. And that cold wind signifies a change in the air, maybe something a  bit out of place, or a harbinger of the future - a reminder of the  fleetingness of the summer days, the rhythms of nature, and bringing  with it just a slight twinge of nostalgia or even dread. But this still  being the lazy days of summer, the theme will prove to be just a bit  lazy as well. The intensity of August’s sun and colors is offset by the  exhibition’s monochromatic atmosphere. Greg Warnke’s Ice Cream Cone is a pure evocation of a summer moment. In Frank Yamrus’ Steve-Ritual, taken in the Moors of Provincetown back in 1994, and Paul Bowen’s clam diggers (Flats) and trawler boat (Mayflower), echoes of Provincetown reverberate. The moods of both night and day are echoed in Jack Pierson’s enigmatic NIGHT -  one of his signature word sculptures, Pablo Picasso's exuberant sculptural ceramic the Joy of Living, as well as Milton Avery’s mysterious woodcut, Trees by the Sea. The sensuous David Armstrong photo of a sun dappled Boris, L.A. is featured along with the intimate Lyle and Robert, Bronx, NY circa mid-1980’s by Lyle Ashton Harris. Richard Tinkler’s untitled, 2017, Becky Kinder’s Mask (Feathers) and James Balla’s ZONK all reverberate with an internal abstracted natural order.
