Provincetown
A special surprise exhibition of 5 new paintings by Stephen Bron Gurtowski.
The gallery is happy to present this special surprise exhibition of five new paintings by Stephen Bron Gurtowski, titled "It's Beautiful Today". This show is a follow up to his recent summer exhibition, "Dancing Barefoot". Juxtaposing large swaths of brushed color, finely detailed figures, and his characteristic use of the untouched canvas as light, Stephen Bron Gurtowski creates paintings that oscillate in the liminal space between abstraction and figuration. Sourcing images from old books and magazines, his own photographs of nature and his domestic life, and the realm of the imagination, Gurtowski’s paintings are an amalgamation of the dream world and the everyday. Gurtowski crafts worlds where naked boys dance barefoot, where flowers might be as big as trees, where bear cubs watch over beautiful rebels, and where an out-of-time woman might burst forth fully formed from a figure sleeping in grass as butterflies flit about. A number of these paintings were influenced by his recent time spent in Provincetown. Abstraction and Figuration. The Past and The Present. The Mundane and the Fantastic. All these elements combine to create his idiosyncratic and colorful Queer fables. Stephen Bron Gurtowski [b. 1993] is a painter living and working in Brooklyn. He studied painting and printmaking, receiving his BFA from Cooper Union, attended Yale Norfolk Summer School, and received an MFA in Painting from NYU.
