On the occasion of our first ever participation at Frieze Masters Spotlight, the Galerie A&R Fleury is delighted to announce a solo exhibition featuring 15 iconic works by Geneviève Claisse (1935-2018), female pioneer of Geometric Abstraction and artistic heir of Auguste Herbin. Worthy of the celebrated Frieze Masters section, our selection, from the estate of the artist, concentrates on a period of twenty years — from the 1960s to 1970s — of her career, which best illustrates her personal style and key experimentation with geometric elements of triangles, squares, and circles.
Triangles, Squares and Circles
Always striking the perfect balance between discipline and intuition, Claisse plays with the extreme simplicity of the shapes transfigured by the variations in compositions and colors. She is relentlessly abstract from day one. Claisse’s persistence in her geometric approach is rare among artists. She has been clean and constant when executing her artistic vision — her visual language is highly recognizable in almost all her works.
The triangles, squares and circles are fundamental elements in her serial compositions throughout her artistic career. It’s for this reason that we decide to feature works of these twenty years where she expanded her key visual vocabulary in search of two-dimensional kinetic effect and juxtaposition of vibrant colored blocks that animate the flatness of the painted surface.
