"Hartung in his last years years, being freer than ever, live only for his painting."
Marie Anderaa, archivist of Hans Hartung since the 50's
Until 28th, December 2020 the A&R Fleury gallery is delighted to present our new exhibition Hans Hartung| The last paintings.
This 20th century genius, whose work still impact the contemporary art, explored unremittingly new ways in order to satisfy his need of creation, his need of action on the canvas. From an early age, his connection with a celestial sky takes shape brilliantly during this final stage, the last of a long journey focused on the future and full of emotion, innovation and technology.
This exhibition explores the last decades of a vivid creation that has reached its pictorial culmination. For Hartung, the eighties brought him a complete freedom. Our selection for this exhibition reflects perfectly the means of creativity exploited in this late stage. One can also notice the remaining bond between the architecture of his workshop and nature, source of inspiration. Thus, the openings oriented outwards are linked to the chosen sizes.
There are two major phases of innovations: the first stretches from 1980 to 1986 and witnesses an intense struggle between the artist, the matter and the medium. Hans Hartung then proved once again how he is inventive when, for instance, he picked branches to use them as brushes.
Starting from 1986, Hans Hartung developed new ways of pulverisation with new utensils such as zip line or sprays. Surprisingly, during this ultimate spatters phase, the artist did not touch the canvas and panels.
