The artist, originally from Japan and currently based in Berlin, will present his first exhibition in Regensburg. Ryo Kato, born in Niimi, Okayama Prefecture, dedicates his art to the connection between nature and humanity. His works serve as a medium to raise awareness about the current state of the environment and to advocate for sustainable protection. Kato creates a captivating visual dynamic through the artistic turmoil on his canvases.
His style is characterized by a successful fusion of figurative and abstract elements. The masterful application of color blends and scraping techniques subtly reveals realistic motifs. At the age of 14, with a promising career in professional Go, Ryo Kato drew inspiration from the French Impressionists. This, according to the artist, was a point of no returned in where he decided to pursue his interest for art.
He began his artistic journey at the age of 17 when he moved to Paris. In 2001, he started his studies at the University of the Arts Berlin under the guidance of Wolfgang Petrick. In 2005, he transferred as a master's student to Daniel Richter's class, successfully completing his master's degree in 2006.In 2012, he won first place at the prestigious Ishi Prize in Japan. This was followed by the inclusion of one of his works in the collection of the Okayama Prefecture Museum in 2013. In 2015, the museum acquired another significant artwork by the artist. In 2021, he was awarded the "Initial" special scholarship by the Academy of Arts Berlin, followed by receiving the "NEUSTART KULTUR-Stipendien" from the KUNSTFONDS Foundation in 2022.
