The Arthur Roger Gallery is pleased to present THE ADVENTURES OF ACID FROG & FRIENDS, an exhibition of works by Dawn DeDeaux. The exhibition will be on view at Arthur Roger Gallery, located at 432 Julia Street, from November 2–December 21, 2019. The gallery will host an opening, with the artist in attendance, on Saturday, November 2 from 6–8 pm.
THE ADVENTURES OF ACID FROG & FRIENDS is Dawn DeDeaux’s eighth exhibition with the gallery and features digitally-manipulated images printed on mirror and paper. The series renders an array of large-scale (88" x 40") mutant creatures in highly saturated, psychedelic-chemical colors. The leading creature in this series is Acid Frog, a mutant with characteristics of both a frog and a human. Acid Frog is the artist’s creation of what humankind might evolve into once the effects of global warming have gripped the planet and the human race is faced with the hard choices of extinction or evolution into a species that can survive the new anthropogenic biosphere.
The series-in-progress is accompanied by an augmented reality feature that will animate the mutant creatures hopping around on contested contemporary sites, and emerging from mercy lagoons and toxic landscapes, in the spirit of cheaply produced sci-fi movies belonging to a pre-digital age.
Dawn DeDeaux was born and continues to reside in New Orleans. She has exhibited throughout the country including at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Armand Hammer Museum, the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, and MASS MoCA. DeDeaux is a recipient of the Rome Prize as the Knight Foundation Visiting Southern Artist and 2013 Artist in Residence at the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. Her work has been included in multiple Prospect New Orleans biennials and her groundbreaking work as a new media artist has been reviewed in national publications. DeDeaux has an upcoming career retrospective at the New Orleans Museum of Art which will open on October 2, 2020, in conjunction with Prospect 5.
