The gallery will host an opening reception with the artist in attendance, Saturday, May 5 from 6–9 pm.
In Fields is Pard Morrison’s fifth exhibition at the Arthur Roger Gallery. Morrison’s work is both sculptural and painterly. Morrison constructs each labor-intensive piece by hand, welding the aluminum structure and firing each color of pigment separately in a process the artist describes as “patination”. His distinct patterns in vibrant reds, blues, greens, yellows, along with more muted earth tones come together to create each distinct piece. The large-scale pieces use color blocks that give the illusion of greater depth.
In Fields is comprised of wall-mounted and columnar multi-section structures as well as color field paintings. Color is important in Morrison’s paintings and column pieces in drawing the viewer’s eye around the piece and creating the illusion of depth. Each color is masked and the dry pigment is hand-applied by brush and fired individually. After the color is fired individually a clear coat is fired on the piece to protect it. All of Pard Morrison’s pieces built to stand up to weather and can be installed either indoors or outdoors.
Morrison is inspired by the color field painters that came before him. Pard Morrison feels that this show is what would happen if Bridget Riley’s tessellating pattern paintings met Donald Judd’s rectilinear, minimalist sculptures. He is also influenced by the likes of James Turrell and Rob Erwin’s phenomenon-based work. These influencers and his own history led this artist to his current show at the Arthur Roger Gallery.
Born in 1975, Pard Morrison lives and works in Colorado. Morrison graduated from Colorado State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a focus on sculpture. His work is recognized internationally having shown in Singapore, Chicago, San Francisco, Santa Fe, Dallas, New Orleans and Denver, and Switzerland to name a few. He was recently commissioned to create a piece for the Embassy of the United States in The Hague in the Netherlands. His work is in the collections of the Lannan Foundation, The Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, The Colorado State University Art Museum, The University of Wyoming Art Museum, The Colorado Springs Fine Art Center, as well as Public and Private Collections.
