This is an exhibition of works by four very successful artists who all grew up in St. Louis. Some received their education here as well, but soon moved on to have their careers elsewhere, primarily New York or California, and one even in Argentina. It is an opportunity to consider what was spawned in the St. Louis community and perhaps contributed to the success of these currently very active and respected artists. St. Louis certainly has a legacy to be proud of! While these artists do not necessarily reflect any similarities in their objects or media, it is interesting to reflect on their careers, and success.  Julia Fernandez-Pol received her BFA from Washington University and then left St. Louis to receive her MFA from Boston University. She is currently exhibiting primarily in California, Colorado, and Argentina, in addition to St. Louis. She is known for her very colorful paintings, often referencing items of nature, and their aesthetics as well as textures.  Gregg Louis grew up in St. Louis, earned his BFA at Missouri State University, Springfield. He also studied at Imperial College, London and received his MFA at the School of Visual Arts, New York. He remained in NYC where he has exhibited and is active in the New York art scene. In addition to New York, he has exhibited internationally in Iceland, Colombia, and the Netherlands. Atrium has shown his work since 2011. His current focus is a series of constellation paintings. In those, he is attempting to connect the physicality of his process with the mysticism of the cosmos. These works prove to be both provocative as well as very inspirational. He is using information from sources, such as images sent back by NASA’s James Webb telescope and is inspired by such artists as Rothko and Frankenthaler. This is very innovative work from an inspired and intellectually astute artist.         Born and raised in St. Louis, Annette Morriss left St. Louis to do undergraduate studies at Stanford and then went to Yale where she received her MFA. She taught in New York at Brearley School and also at Vassar College. She has been awarded a National Fellowship for Drawing from the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation and has received a Louis Comfort Tiffany Fellowship. Morriss has been an established member of the New York art scene since completing her education and continues with a very active studio. As a highly intellectual artist, she is interested in geometric forms, how they interact and their meaning, and as well in subtle textures. Her work is actively collected by both private, corporate, and institutional clientele. Morriss has been represented by Atrium Gallery since 1989 and has an active exhibition schedule both in St. Louis and New York City.  Caroline Weld grew up in St. Louis from a family of several generations there, truly steeped in the values and traditions of this locale. She left to study at Boston University where she received her BA degree and then on to the National Louis University, Chicago where she received her MA. Weld has spent most of her adult life in New England, with a family base in Nantucket, where she spent many summers and extended holidays. Now based there full-time, she is very involved in its extensive art scene and is active throughout New England. The topography and exposure to the ocean are primary inspirations for her ever expanding accomplishments and success. While her paintings seem abstract, with a closer look viewers definitely identify the omnipresent movements and color palette of an ocean environment. Weld’s work is also informed by the very atmosphere of New England and much of what the natural landscape has to offer. She has received much success and continues to be recognized as a strong New England artist known for following her inspiration from her surroundings.
