1963: Born in Liaoning Province, China
1988: Earned Bachelor of Fine Arts in Oil Painting, Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China
1990: Began to engage with China’s independent filmmakers
1992: Director Wang Xiaoshuai directed Liu Xiaodong in The Days. This was awarded by the BBC as one of 100 best films made in the last 100 years.
1993: Worked as artistic director on the projects of film director Zhang Yuan’s Beijing Bastard
1995: Earned Master of Fine Arts in Oil Painting, Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China
1998 - 1999: Studied at Academy of Fine Arts, University of Complutense, Madrid, Spain
2006: Conceived concept for Jia Zhangke’s award-winning film Dong, which was awarded best documentary film at both the Italian and European Film Association awards
: Conceived concept for Jia Zhangke’s film Still Life, which won the gold prize at the 63rd Venice Film Festival
: Currently teaches in the Oil Painting Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China
