Buchmann Galerie was founded in 1975 by Felix and Elena Buchmann in St. Gallen, Switzerland immediately distinguishing itself for its proposals with presentations by emerging artists such as Matias Spescha, Urs Lüthi, Dieter Roth, Arnulf Rainer, nowadays leading personalities.
In 1983 the gallery moved to Basel, next to the Museum für Gegenwartskunst. In these new spaces dedicated to the major names of international art the gallery organized exhibitions showing the artistic output of: Giovanni Anselmo, Georg Baselitz, Daniel Buren, Lawrence Carroll, Tony Cragg, Wolfgang Laib, Bertrand Lavier, Richard Long, Mario Merz, Tatsuo Miyajima and Giuseppe Penone.
Since 1995 Buchmann Galerie has opened a branch in Germany, first in Cologne and later in Berlin. In 1998 the gallery moved from Basel to Agra, where spaces were created and designed to exhibit above all outdoors sculptures.
In 2013 the gallery opens a new additional space, Buchmann Lugano, located in the city center.
Since autumn 2020 Agra space moves and concentrates all exhibition activities at the Lugano gallery, next to MASI - Palazzo Reali.
The gallery participates regularly to Art Basel fair since 1981.
