Die Buchmann Galerie freut sich, mit Back to the Cave eine neue Ausstellung von Lawrence Carroll (*1954 in Melbourne) anzukündigen. Nach der Präsentation großformatiger Bilder an der diesjährigen Biennale Venedig, wendet sich Lawrence Carroll in Back to the Cave kleineren, objekthaften Arbeiten zu.
Er zeigt drei neue Bildtypen, die er in den letzten Monaten intensiver Arbeit in seinem Studio in Marquette, Michigan, entwickelt hat: die Slide Paintings, Hinge Paintings und Tube Paintings. Lawrence Carroll’s Arbeiten bewegen sich an der Grenze zwischen Malerei und Skulptur mit einem sehr poetischen, teils biografischen Ausdruck. Dabei entwickelt er eine Bildsprache, die sich über ein System verschiedener Typologien aufbaut. Seit den 1990er Jahren sind rund ein Dutzend verschiedener Bildgattungen entstanden. Die Bezeichnungen verweisen beispielsweise auf den Entstehungsprozess wie Cut Paintings, Insert Paintings und Stacked Paintings oder verleihen den Arbeiten einen lebendigen Charakter, wie Sleeping Paintings und Freezing Paintings. Auch die Präsentation an sich wird reflektiert, wie bei den Shelf Paintings, Corner Paintings oder Table Paintings.

Die Bildtypen verwendet Lawrence Carroll gleichsam als Folie für seine Malerei, die so stets in Bezug zu der Form des Objektes und dieses wiederum zu dem Betrachter und dem Raum steht. Lawrence Carroll führt dazu aus:

„When I started moving the works around in my studio, I became familiar with paintings leaning against the wall or on each other, or even laying horizontally on the floor. Even these casual placements in my studio, which happened in part for practical reasons, entered my work, became part of it’s content. The various placements created different tensions. The works started to feel different. Each placement created a psychology. Zuletzt waren Arbeiten von Lawrence Carroll in der Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, im Casal Solleric, Palma de Mallorca, der Jumex Collection, Mexico City und auf der Biennale Venedig zu sehen.

The Buchmann Gallery is pleased to announce Back to the Cave, a new exhibition of works by Lawrence Carroll (*1954 in Melbourne). Following the presentation of large-format works at this year’s Biennale in Venice, Back to the Cave sees Lawrence Carroll focusing on smaller, object-based pieces.

The show will feature three new types of pictures that were developed in an intensive process over the past few months in his studio in Marquette, Michigan: the Slide Paintings, Hinge Paintings and Tube Paintings.

Lawrence Carroll’s works straddle the boundary between painting and sculpture with a very poetic, sometimes even autobiographical presence. In his work he develops a pictorial language based on a system of different typologies. Since the 1990s the artist has created around a dozen different picture genres. The names and descriptions indicate, for example, the working process, such as Cut Paintings, Insert Paintings and Stacked Paintings, or give the pictures a character, such as Sleeping Paintings and Freezing Paintings. The names also reflect the presentation itself, as in the Shelf Paintings, Corner Paintings or Table Paintings.

Lawrence Carroll also uses the pictures as a foil for his paintings, always creating a reference to the shape of the object, and hence also to the observer and the room. The artist describes this as follows:

Lawrence Carroll’s works have recently been featured in shows at the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane; at Casal Solleric in Palma de Mallorca; the Jumex Collection, Mexico City; and the Biennale in Venice.
