Die Buchmann Galerie freut sich, die Ausstellung mit neuen Arbeiten von Lawrence Carroll (*1954) anzukündigen, die sich mit den Dust Paintings und den Prop Paintings auf zwei installative Werkgruppen konzentriert.

Für die Dust Paintings trägt Lawrence Carroll vor Ort mehrere Schichten feinen Staubes auf die Wand auf. Die ephemere Materialität verdichtet sich in der klaren Form des tableauxhaften Formates. Die schattenhafte Präsenz der Wandarbeiten stellt Lawrence Carroll in Bezug zu kleinen Akkumulationen warm leuchtender Glühbirnen, die direkt auf dem Boden liegen.

„Ich fing an, Licht in meine Arbeiten einzubeziehen. Ich platzierte ein kleines Arbeitslicht neben mein Gemälde, manchmal direkt auf den Boden unterhalb des Gemäldes … Die Tatsache, dass das Licht verglühen würde, interessierte mich sehr; jede Idee verglüht irgendwann, bis ein Anderer kommt und sie an einen anderen Ort trägt, die durchgebrannte Glühbirne ersetzt und einen Raum oder eine Idee erleuchtet, die ehemals verbraucht oder veraltet erschienen. Die Vorstellung von Erneuerung hat mich immer schon interessiert.”

Aus der Vorstellung, dass Erneuerung stets möglich ist, sind die Prop Paintings entstanden. Weißlich bemalte, kastenförmige Objekte ruhen auf dem Boden und sind gegen die Wand gelehnt, wodurch eine bewusste Verbindung zwischen Boden und Wand geschaffen ist. Die Prop Paintings verdeutlichen den skulpturalen und installativen Charakter vieler Arbeiten von Lawrence Carroll.

Für Lawrence Carroll sind die Prop Paintings eine andere Formulierung der kühlen Kuben der Minimal Art eines Donald Judd. Die klare und distanzierte Form, ein einstmals radikaler künstlerischer Ausdruck, weicht einem eher gestischen Ausdruck der Erinnerung und Verletzbarkeit, wodurch die Prop Paintings nicht nur die Parameter der Minimal Art unterlaufen, sondern in ihrer Umsetzung ihre eigene Gültigkeit erlangen.

Lawrence Carrolls Arbeiten wurden unter anderem auf der documenta 9, auf der 53. Biennale Di Venezia, im Museo Correr Venedig, im Museum Folkwang Essen, im Guggenheim Museum Soho/New York, im Espoo Museum of Modern Art Finnland, im Museum Abteiberg Mönchengladbach oder in den Deichtorhallen Hamburg ausgestellt.

The Buchmann Galerie is pleased to announce an exhibition with new works by Lawrence Carroll (b. 1954); it concentrates on installations from two series: The Dust Paintings and The Prop Paintings.

In The Dust Paintings, Lawrence Carroll applies several layers of fine dust to the walls of the installation. The ephemeral materiality intensifies in the clear form of the tableau-like format. Lawrence Carroll relates the shadowy presence of the wall works to small accumulations of warmly glowing lightbulbs lying directly on the floor.

“I started to incorporate light into my work. A small studio light would be placed near my painting, sometimes on the floor under the painting … The simple fact that the light would burn out interested me greatly; all ideas burn out eventually, until someone else comes along and takes it somewhere else, replaces the burnt-out bulb, and lights an idea or space that was once considered tired or used up. This notion of rejuvenation has always interested me.”

The Prop Paintings are based on the idea that rejuvenation is always possible. Boxlike objects painted white rest on the floor and lean on the wall, establishing a deliberate connection between the floor and the wall. The Prop Paintings clarify the features of Lawrence Carroll’s works that derive from sculpture and the installation. For Lawrence Carroll, The Prop Paintings are a new formulation of the cool cubes of the Minimal Art of the likes of Donald Judd. The clear and distanced form, a form of artistic expression that was once considered radical, gives way instead to a more gestural expression of memory and vulnerability. The Prop Paintings thus not only undercut the parameters of Minimal Art but also achieve their own validity in their realization.
