The Buchmann Galerie is delighted to announce its first solo exhibition of Pedro Cabrita Reis for Gallery Weekend Berlin. Pedro Cabrita Reis (born 1956 in Lisbon, Portugal) is one of the leading visual artists of his generation and one of Portugal’s most internationally recognized artists. The artist’s multifaceted works in a variety of media—from drawing to painting and sculpture—have a haunting presence and poetic power.

Under the title Wunderkammer, the exhibition brings together a broad selection of works from recent years: Objects made from found materials that refer to inhabited and uninhabited spaces (Natura morta II, 2023); white earthenware sculptures (Faianças brancas) that speak of the forces to which the clay has been subjected; paintings on both canvas and paper that seek to be understood as explorations of the medium itself; and figurative paintings in which complex emotionalities are negotiated. Three large sculptures made of aluminium profiles complement this lavish exhibition. The large aluminium sculptures refer to imaginary cities, as in Another city model #2, 2024, and to natural growth, as in Blossom #7, 2024. The exhibition emphasizes the various aspects of the artist’s painterly work, showing works on canvas from the series “Landscapes”, “The dark self-portraits”, and the sublime works in oil on paper from “Considerations on landscape”.

A central theme in Reis’ work is the exploration of space, time and memory. The artist is interested in how places and objects shape our perception, and how we connect to past events and emotions through them. His works often reflect on the concept of boundaries and transitions, be they between public and private spaces, different materials, or artistic disciplines.

In the context of the exhibition, the artist’s works, like a panopticon, observe a broad cultural space, from public and urban environments to the history of painting and sculpture. In his work, the individual perspective expands to a collective one that encompasses both the natural and the manufactured world. The works of Reis thus symbolize the negotiation between our experience of life and our natural and architectural context, which is constantly in progress.

Pedro Cabrita Reis’ works are represented in the collections of many important national and international museums, including Tate Modern in London, the Gulbenkian in Lisbon, the Arts Club of Chicago, the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Serralves Museum in Porto, the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) in Lisbon, S.M.A.K. in Ghent, Centre Pompidou in Paris, IVAM in Valencia, CAC in Málaga, Kunst Museum Winterthur in Switzerland, the Jumex Collection in Mexico City, the Ontario Art Gallery in Toronto and the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid.
