Die Galerie CAMERA WORK freut sich, ab dem 25. März 2017 die Ausstellung »Ein Leben in Bildern« von Thomas Billhardt zu präsentieren. Anlässlich des 80. Geburtstags von Thomas Billhardt zeigt die Retrospektive 100 Fotografien aus seinem Lebenswerk. Zeitgleich zur Ausstellung erscheinen die Autobiografie »Thomas Billhardt: Meine Abenteuer mit der Kamera« (Nora Verlag) und das von CAMERA WORK herausgegebene Fotobuch »Thomas Billhardt: Ein Leben in Bildern«.

1937 in Chemnitz in der ehemaligen DDR geboren, spielte die Fotografie schon früh die Hauptrolle im Leben von Thomas Billhardt. Im Alter von 14 Jahren begann seine Mutter, die ebenfalls als Fotografin tätig war, ihn zum Fotografen auszubilden. Anschließend studierte er bis 1957 an der Fachschule für angewandte Kunst in Magdeburg. Erste praktische Erfahrungen konnte er zu Beginn seiner Karriere als Werksfotograf im Braunkohletagebau in Grosskayna sammeln, bevor Thomas Billhardt als Verlagsfotograf beim Postkartenverlag Bild und Heimat eingestellt wird. Zeitgleich begann er sein Studium zum Fotografiker und Fotodesigner an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig. Seine Diplomarbeit über den Alexanderplatz in Berlin sollte ein Vorbote dafür sein, dass er Zeit seines Lebens immer wieder an diesen historischen Ort zurückkehren sollte. Auch der weitere Werdegang liest sich wie eine Blaupause eines zielstrebigen Fotografen. Schon während seines Studiums in Leipzig wird Thomas Billhardt Mitglied im Verband Deutscher Journalisten. Die folgenden Jahre arbeitete er als freischaffender Fotograf – ein Privileg, dass er schätzte, um sich auch fotografisch auf freiem Terrain bewegen zu können und nicht zwanghaft an Aufträge gebunden zu sein. Wenige Jahre nach seinem Eintritt in die SED wurde Thomas Billhardt als Arbeitsgruppenleiter bei der Deutschen Werbeagentur engagiert. Mitgliedschaften bei der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Photographie, beim Bund Freischaffender Foto-Designer und beim Deutschen Journalistenverband komplettieren Thomas Billhardts innerberufliches Engagement im Bereich des Fotojournalismus.

Als Reportagefotograf reiste Thomas Billhardt in insgesamt 49 Länder – die dort entstandenen Bilder wurden weltweit publiziert. Die unermessliche Leistung von Thomas Billhardt, mit seinen Fotografien aus den Kriegs- und Krisenregionen dieser Welt die Öffentlichkeit über Krieg und dem daraus entstandenen Leid aufzuklären, wiegt über allem. Weltberühmt wurde er mit seinen Fotografien vom Vietnamkrieg in den 1960er Jahren. Zahlreiche internationale Ausstellungen würdigen dieses erfolgreiche Bestreben von Thomas Billhardt. In London, Moskau, Beirut, Hanoi, Florenz, Paris sowie in vielen anderen Städten wurden und werden die Fotografien von Thomas Billhardt als Zeitzeugnis sowie als bedeutender Teil der deutschen Fotografiegeschichte ausgestellt. Im Jahr 1988 waren seine Arbeiten auch Bestandteil der UNICEF-Ausstellung »Kinder der Welt« in New York. Einige Jahre später führten die UNICEF und Thomas Billhardt ihre Zusammenarbeit fort, indem Thomas Billhardt mehrere Projekte in Asien fotografisch begleitete.

Das Lebenswerk von Thomas Billhardt bis 1999 befindet sich im Eigentum der CAMERA WORK AG.

Gallery CAMERA WORK is pleased to present the exhibition »Ein Leben in Bildern« by German photographer Thomas Billhardt until May 6, 2017. On the occasion of Thomas Billhardt's 80th birthday, the retrospective presents 100 photographs of his lifework. Born 1937 in Chemnitz in the former GDR, photography began to play the leading role quite early in the life of Thomas Billhardt. His mother, who also worked as a photographer, began to teach him about photography when he was 14. Afterwards, he studied at the Technical School of Applied Art in Magdeburg until 1957. At the early stages of his career, he had the opportunity to gain practical experience as a photographer in the brown coal open cast mining in Grosskayna. Later he became a photographer publishing for the postcard company »Bild und Heimat«. At the same time, he started his studies at the »Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst« in Leipzig. His dissertation about the Alexanderplatz in Berlin should be a herald for his repeated return to this historical place throughout his life. His further development can also be read as the blueprint of a focused photographer. Thus, Thomas Billhardt became a member of the association of German journalists already during his studies in Leipzig. The following years he worked as a freelance photographer – for him the privilege to enjoy even more freedom in his photographic expression and the release of the constraints of compulsive orders. A few years after joining the Socialist Unity Party, Thomas Billhardt was engaged as a working group leader in a German advertising agency. Memberships at the German Society of Photography, at the Alliance of Freelance Photo Designers and at the German Journalist's Association complete Thomas Billhardt's inner professional engagement in photojournalism. In total, Thomas Billhardt traveled to 49 countries as a reportage photographer and his pictures have been published worldwide. The extensive achievement of Thomas Billhardt is the raising of awareness by demonstrating the suffering resulting from war in his photographs of war regions and crisis regions to the general public. He became world-famous with his photographs of the Vietnam War in the 1960s. Numerous international exhibitions appreciate this successful aspiration of Thomas Billhardt. In London, Moscow, Beirut, Hanoi, Florence, Paris as well as in many other cities the photographs were and are issued as a testimony and as an important part of the German history of photography. In 1988, his works were also part of the UNICEF exhibition »Children of the World« in New York. Some years later, UNICEF and Thomas Billhardt continued their cooperation, Thomas Billhardt accompanying several projects in Asia with his camera. The lifework of Thomas Billhardt until 1999 is in the property of the CAMERA WORK AG.
