Renowned Mexican sculptor Jorge Marín returns to Couturier Gallery with a series of bronze sculptures for his autobiographical solo show Conversaciones / Conversations. The figural works in the exhibition illustrate Marin’s inner dialogues, aspirations seen within an admittedly surrealist context. The opening reception will be Saturday, January 9th from 6 – 8 pm.
The impetus for much of Marín’s previous bodies of work derived from current events, ancient history, experiments in pushing materials of his sculptures to their structural limits and observation of others. With the works for Conversaciones Marín delved inside himself as he explains:
“The bronze sculptural series I am presenting here revolves around the theme of autoreflection, which I arrived at out of necessity to know more about myself, establishing a dynamic that began with silence to listen to myself, have a conversation with and finally arrive at the most honest understanding of myself possible, to comprehend and respect my true nature.
The exhibition “Conversations” takes the form of people in or on boats, spheres or frames, in reflective attitudes inviting the spectator to look at himself and after all, why not, to open their own internal dialogue.”
