Meet Me Halfway: Selections from the Anita Reiner Collection

540 W. 28th Street New York, NY 10001, USA Thursday, February 26, 2015–Saturday, April 4, 2015

Cristin Tierney Gallery is honored to present Meet Me Halfway: Selections from the Anita Reiner Collection. Opening on Thursday, February 26th at 6:00 pm, the exhibition features an array of works collected by Anita Reiner. Artists include Wangechi Mutu, Anselm Kiefer, El Anatsui, Gabriel Orozco, Sean Scully, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Robert Mapplethorpe, Shirin Neshat, Marlene Dumas, Juan Muñoz and Jeff Koons.

Drawn to the art of her time, Anita Reiner combined intellect, tenacity and an adventurous spirit. Essential to her philosophy of collecting was a sage piece of advice once given to her by collector and critic Duncan Phillips, who said, "Young lady, you always have to meet new art half way." Over nearly forty years, Reiner built a formidable collection that evolved as her tastes and interests expanded. A testament to her dedication, Meet Me Halfway documents Reiner's place in the history of contemporary art and its patronage.

Meet Me Halfway explores many significant themes, including figuration, the position of women artists, globalization and interest in material and process. Underscoring Reiner's wide-ranging curiosity, the exhibition encompasses a breadth of subjects, media and artistic voices. Some works, such as El Anatsui's sumptuous textile of woven bottle caps and wrappers, exude a quiet elegance. Others, like Wangechi Mutu's sculpture blackthrone XII, with its fetish-like combination of hair and tinsel with wood and plastic, command a regal authority.

Many artists represented in this exhibition draw inspiration from the mystical, mysterious and uncanny. From Gabriel Orozco's tightly cropped photograph focusing on the vulnerability of a young woman's neck, to Marlene Dumas's luscious oil on canvas portrait of Mary Magdalene, the collection showcases works that transform private realities into tactile expressions. Attesting to the universal appeal of the personal, Meet Me Halfway celebrates the discerning eye of a remarkable collector.
