Dep Art Gallery project for Artissima 2023 highlights the artistic connections and dialogue between two generations of German artists: Imi Knoebel (1940), Regine Schumann (1961), and Wolfram Ullrich (1961).
We aim to explore the rich legacy of a moment in German art and its continued evolution through these three artists' unique perspectives and innovative techniques. At the core of our project is the master, Imi Knoebel, whose minimalist hybrids of painting and sculpture have served as a point of reference for generations of artists. Knoebel's distinctive use of acrylic sheets and aluminium structures reflects his exploration of the relationships between colour, form, and space. In dialogue with Knoebel's legacy, Regine Schumann and Wolfram Ullrich have each developed their own distinct artistic languages while drawing on the foundations laid by their predecessor. Schumann's work focuses on the transformative effects of light through her use of fluorescent plexiglass, creating immersive colour spaces that invite viewers to engage in sensory dialogues with her installations. Similarly, Wolfram Ullrich's acrylic-painted steel geometries challenge our perceptions of space and construction, demonstrating the potential of artistic creations to reshape our understanding of the world around us. By juxtaposing the works of Knoebel, Schumann, and Ullrich, our project seeks to compare their respective artistic investigations, demonstrating how each artist has built upon and diverged from the foundations given by a generation of artists active in minimal, constructive art. For this project, Knoebel acts as the best example to follow, from which to start anew and then surpass. In doing so, we hope to generate a sense of care and understanding, as well as an appreciation for the rich tapestry of art, in alignment with the vision of Artissima 2023's theme "Relations of Care."
