Born at the foot of Montmatre on August 14.
1932
Begins work at his father's photographic studio
1936
Death of his father and collapse of the family business. Decides to earn his living as a freelance photographer. First pictures are published in Regards
1937
Produces 'Neige dans les Vosges' exhibition at the Gare de l'Est, Paris. Meets David Szymin ('Chin') and Robert Capa. First assignment for Plaisir cie France.
1938 - 1939
Reports on the strike at Citroën. Travels in Greece, Yugoslavia and Albania.
1941 - 1944
Stage manager for travelling theatre company in Non-Occupied Zone in south of France.
1945 - 1950
Works for illustrated press'. Point de rue, L'Ecran Français, Regards, L'Illustration, Le Monde Illustré. Member of the Groupe des XV.Joins Rapho Agency. From 1947, works on Belleville-Ménilmontant project.
1947
Awarded the Prix Kodak
1951
Publishes Photo reportage et chasse aux images.
1954
Publishes Belleville-Ménilmontant, with text by Pierre Mac Orlan.
1975
Made Honorary President of National Association of Photographers- Reporters-Illustrators.
1979
Awarded the Grand Prix des Arts et Lettres for Photography by the Minister for Culture.
1980
Publishes Sur le fil du hasard.
1982
Full-length film Un voyage de Rose, with Willy Ronis and Guy Le Querrec, made and directed by Patrick Barbéris.
1983
Willy Ronis is published. Donates his photographic work to the French state. Returns to Paris and continues to work with Rapho
1985
Publishes Mon Paris. Official retrospective held at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris. Named Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
