Born in Rümmingen, Germany
1910
Trains to become a sculptor in Lörrach, Germany
1914 - 1920
Settles in Basel, Switzerland where he stays until the end of World War II. Works as a labourer then as assistant for sculptor Otto Roos. Later as Assistant for sculptor Carl Burkhardt which enables him to pay for a small studio
1921 - 1922
Sees works of Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Schmidt-Rottluff. Travels to Germany where he sees the Munch-Retrospective. Decides to become a painter.
1923
Meets Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and visits him in Davos, Switzerland
1924
Founding-member of the group "Rot/Blau" with fellow artists Albert Müller, Paul Camenisch and Werner Neuhaus
