Joan Miro: Working Proofs from the Studio

602 E. Cooper Avenue Aspen, CO 81611, USA Monday, December 18, 2017–Wednesday, January 31, 2018 Opening Reception: Wednesday, December 27, 2017, 6 p.m.–8 p.m.

As part of our 20th year anniversary, we are proud to present this collection of unique, hand-embellished works on paper by Joan Miró. Most of these engravings were executed in the studio of Piero Crommelynck and illustrate the important, collaborative relationship between the artist and his master printer.

Piero Crommelynck was one of the most respected intaglio engravers of the twentieth-century. Once named “The Prince of the Printmakers,” Piero, passionately worked to master the technical complexities and learn the essential role of the engraver. He understood that making a print is unlike drawing on paper and offers the opportunity to create entirely different effects. It requires an extensive series of techniques and the assistance of a true craftsman to achieve the desired outcome. In his studio, Miró created a series of working proofs leading up to the finished works - collaborative masterpieces combining Miró’s unique vision and Crommelynk’s ingenuity.

Here you will find experiments with color that sometimes differ from the finished piece, many with extensive instructions to the printer in the artist’s hand – an intimate view of the creative process. Most of the works presented including trial proofs, working examples and definitive proofs designated bon à tirer (good to pull)
are “one-of-a-kind” impressions and thus extremely rare. Some pieces are offered individually and others, so closely related to the evolution of the work, that they belong together.

This presentation of Miró works is just one of many significant exhibitions of Modern Master material that Galerie Maximillian has offered since June of 1997. We look forward to seeing you in the gallery this winter to view this collection and other new treasures as we celebrate another great year of presenting fine art in Aspen.
