SHIN Sung Hy (Sagan dong)

14 Samcheong-ro, Jungno-gu, Seoul, 110-190, South Korea Monday, September 6, 2010–Sunday, October 31, 2010

Shin Sung-Hy’s stylistic device is marked with his maximalist approach to his canvas that is saturated with various colors and rich texture. His cardboard collage along with stitched canvas works show the artistic tendencies of Shin as he flourishes as a colorist and a maximalist. The artist’s early works are marked with his monochrome linen paintings and other minimalist works, whereas another aspect of his oeuvre is represented by his maximalist works, such as the colorful collages stitches and nouage paintings.

The artist constantly develops his artistic vocabulary as he moves from minimalism to maximalism, yet both the minimalist and maximalist tendencies coexist in his nouage paintings. The two-sidedness of his aesthetics is repeatedly shown whether it be in his all-over composition of his maximalist nouage or in his minimalist nouage.

Commemorating the first year of the artist’s passing away, the current exhibition is devided into two sections- the first part is devoted to the maximalist aspect of Shin and second on the minimalist aspect. The first part will consist of colorful and all-over nouage paintings, along with collages and stitching works of their likes. The second park will consist of minimalist nouage, collage, stitch works, and early monochrome linen paintings. This two-park exhibition will investigate the worm-hearted sentiments of the artist as an individual along with his decisive and earnest approach to his works.
