1900: Born: January 5, in Paris, France
1918: Drafted into the Army, where he befriended Jacques Prévert
1923: Profoundly shaken by his discovery of a painting by Giorgio de Chirico, "Child’s Skull" in a gallery window. Began paiting after this encounter
1924: Introduced to the circle of surrealist artists around André Breton, by his friend Prévert
1927: Developed his own unique surrealist painting style
1938: Moved to New York with fellow artist Kay Sage
1942: Moved to Woodbury, CT
1948: Became a citizen of the United States
1955: Died: January 15, in Woodbury, CT
