Yi Hwan Kwon’s shadow works show formativeness of ‘existence made to life by absence’. Shadow is coincidentia oppositorum of existence and non-existence. In such a sense shadow is a trace. “To feel the trace” is a phrase that we are all familiar with that relates to us that there was an existence but it is absent. Trace conjures an infinite aura of sensibility that words alone cannot grasp. However, trace eventually goes back to illusion. Absence, as a shadow, conjures existence; and the existence leaves a shadow behind as a trace but eventually is an illusion. Yi Hwan Kwon’s works intend to show existence as a formative trace by absence, illuminating the sublimity of illusion with an aesthetics of shadow.
