Biography

Timeline

Edward Dufner is known as New Jersey’s most important impressionist. He studied in Paris and returned to the United States in 1903 settling first in Buffalo and then in New York City. He began painting in the Impressionist style and taught at the Art Students Leagues of both cities. In 1910, he held special classes in Caldwell, New Jersey, and he spent most of his summers painting there. He is especially known for his paintings of children by a lake with ducks and birch trees as part of the composition. These works are very delicate and executed in a soft palette of greens, yellows and blues.
