HUMANITY

A SURVEY OF OUR TIMES (REPRISE)
22 APRIL - 23 JULY 2022

HUMANITY (Reprise) is a continuation of our exhibition from 2021. Time is collapsed and made fluid as events of the past are mirrored in moments from the present. In this extremely divisive moment in history, HUMANITY demonstrates how connected the world actually is; regardless of decade or locale, global countries and citizens share more commonalities than dissimilarities. Viewers from around the world will be able to identify with the images, as they depict universal themes, hardships, and experiences that portray an indomitable human spirit.

Hilton | Asmus Contemporary is pleased to present HUMANITY a group exhibition featuring Hugh Arnold, Susan Aurinko, Nick Compton, David Gamble, Kostis Georgiou, Cristina Mittermeier, Paul Nicklen, Jack Perno, Marco Nereo Rotelli, Lawrence Schiller, Tom Stoddart, Blake Ward, Boky Hackel-Ward, Michael Ward, Julian Wasser, Zack Whitford, Ted Williams, David Yarrow.

Although many of these artists have worked in different time periods, some during the 20th century and others during the 21st century, the imagery espoused in their art remains consistent – scenes of protests then and now, war and its effects, the Civil Rights movement, presidents and decision makers, homelessness and wealth disparity, as well as figures who serve as symbols of peace and hope are.

Many of the works in exhibition are documentarian in nature and therefore factual, yet some will generate differing perspectives based on one’s political beliefs. Although Humanity presents moments in time that most will recognize, images were chosen by their ability to evoke distinctive emotions based on who is encountering the work.

Author James Baldwin’s words echo through the chambers of HUMANITY:

“The precise role of the artist, then, is to illuminate that darkness, blaze roads through vast forests,
so that we will not, in all our doing, lose sight of its purpose, which is, after all, to make the world a more human dwelling place.”
