Received his first camera
1941
Moved to Lyon and found work in the photo lab of Blanc and Demilly
1943 - 1944
Moved to Switzerland, where he studied typography and layout design with Jean Manevy
1944
Returned to France and began working for the newspaper Libération, doing typesetting and layout
Shot his first photo story for a local newspaper
1950 - 1974
Worked as a staff member for the prestigious monthly magazine Réalités. During this time the magazine published three special issues filled entirely with Charbonnier's photographs
1970
Invited by Michel Tournier to participate in the inauguration exhibitions of the first "Rencontre d'Arles"
1996
Received the Grand Prix de la photographie de la ville de Paris
2004
Died in Grasse on May 28
