1922: Born: in Liège, Belgium
1940 - 1943: Studied drawing at the Amsterdam Rijksakademie, but taught himself how to paint. While at the academy he became a close friend of Karel Appel
1940: Emigrated to the Netherlands, subsequently naturalized
1948: Co-founded the REFLEX movement
Co-founded the CoBra or Cobra Group
1950: Moved to Paris, France
1953: Studied etching under S.W. Hayter at Atelier 17, Paris, France
1954 - 1955: Studied Ceramics with Mazzotti at Albisola Mare, Italy
1956: Awarded the Guggenheim Netherlands Prize
1961 - 1966: Worked in Mallorca and Cadaques, Spain
: Lives and works in Paris, France
