Our gallery primarily focuses on artists of the German Expressionist movement. In addition to works of some of the most well-known representatives of this period (e.g. Otto Dix, George Grosz, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde, Max Pechstein, Christian Rohlfs), we also focus on the life and works of the so-called "Missing generation", artists with promising careers in the 1920s who were hindered in their profession in Nazi Germany and whose works were defamed as "degenerate" (e.g. Hans Feibusch, Franz Heckendorf, Josef Scharl, Werner Scholz).
A second thematic focus lies on German artists who emigrated to Italy before World War II and whose works reflect a "Longing for Italy," a cultural fascination with Italy that has a long history among German artists, poets, writers, and intellectuals (e.g. Eduard Bargheer, Max Peiffer- Watenphul, Heinrich Steiner).
Finally, our regular program includes artists whose works relate thematically or visually with the two aforementioned groups (e.g. Eduardo Chillida, Klaus Fussmann, Alex Katz, Joan Miró). Works by these artists are frequently included in our yearly summer/winter group exhibitions.
