Founded in 1936 with original staff photographers Margaret Bourke-White, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Thomas McAvoy, and Peter Stackpole, LIFE magazine is the visual chronicle of the “American century.” Its staff photographers, which eventually grew to ninety, documented the events, stories, and people that shaped the modern era.
