Galleria Mattia De Luca is pleased to announce that the exhibition Lucio Fontana | Osvaldo Borsani will be held from 21st October 2020 to 23rd January 2021 in the prestigious setting of the historic Palazzo Albertoni Spinola in Piazza di Campitelli.The exhibition aims to retrace the milestones of the creative partnership between the architect and designer Osvaldo Borsani (1911-1985) and the famous artist Lucio Fontana (1899-1968) through the most exceptional works to emerge from this collaboration between the late 1940s, when Fontana returned to Italy, and the 1950s. This immersive exhibition displaying works exemplary of this period, many of which belong to the construction of Casa G., seeks to recreate in its entirety one of the rare living spaces produced by Osvaldo Borsani and Lucio Fontana inside the exhibition space.This relationship was born out of the the ability of these two leading exponents of Italian art and architecture to move beyond their respective creative paths to arrive at a new destination, overcoming the constraints and boundaries of their various disciplines to give rise to a free formal research charged with creative energy. The fusion of these two technical perspectives generated a new environmental vision in which different parts contribute to the implementation of the idea of a harmonious and inclusive environment. This environmental rethinking of interiors was defined by the coexistence of the elements of the Baroque and Spatialism introduced by Fontana and by Borsani’s technological and aesthetic approach: various experimental interior projects carried out between 1947 and 1956 led to the creation of environments where surfaces and spaces would expand and become harmonized through intricate plastic work combining figurative and abstract elements, testament to the two artists’ parallel trajectories, their rapid and radical transition between two eras, two styles, two worlds.Such was the origin of the famous Soffitto (Ceiling) of 1949, which is now reinstalled in the premises of Galleria Mattia De Luca. It is a fine example of “total sculpture” in which traditional and modern elements of Fontana’s research coexist: spatialist spirals and a significant baroque element, neon lighting and aerial light sculpture, which would lead Fontana to create his iconic works of the 1950s.Another work on display, the Bar Unit, created the same year, played an important role in the spatial concept sought by Borsani and Fontana. It is the pivotal point of this creative experiment where constructive elements meet the more classicist language of Fontana, for whom the exhibition displays a core body of sculptural works to emerge from this friendship. These are supreme examples of the Argentinian artist’s portrait technique and his reinterpretations of equestrian themes.The exhibition culminates with a display of Fontana’s original drawings, created in 1956 for the facade of Borsani’s project for the Tecno headquarters in Milan, which still adorns the first floor of the historic building. These are shown alongside an important body of works and pieces of furniture from the same period, which allow us to broaden our understanding of this vital period of intersections and influences of different disciplines of the Italian Art.
