LAURA ADLER: RECENT PAINTINGS
AT PAUL THIEBAUD GALLERY, SAN FRANCISCO
San Francisco, California: The Paul Thiebaud Gallery is pleased to mark the
opening of the 2006 season with a show of the work of Laura Adler. Laura
Adler: Recent Paintings runs from January 10th through February 25th. This
is the first solo exhibition of the artist¹s work‹ small-format oils on
linen‹on the West Coast.
For the imagery in this new body of work, the New York City-based artist
turns to the natural world in an effort to discern the abstract qualities
lingering just beneath the surface of what is presented before her. Derived
from an effort to unite the abstract and representational aspects of a
scene, her paintings embody this elusive state of balance.
In the artist¹s own words, ³When I am in nature, what gets me going is to
look at a scene and marvel at how surreal it all is - the shapes of the
cows, the way a building is wedged against the sky and against another
building, a lamppost pressing against a passerby and the passerby pressing
back - it all begins to look to me like a giant jigsaw puzzle, in both
two-dimensions and three-dimensions in the same moment.²
Mostly small in scale, her oil paintings establish for the viewer an
immediate intimacy with the various landscapes of the Northeast. From the
soft rolling of New England hills to the detached stillness of Soho
rooftops, atmosphere and light are suffused with a voluminous quality.
For the artist, working with smaller scaled canvases proves more conducive
to capturing the fleeting weather patterns she¹s observing. Her affinity
for sudden shifts in weather lies in its potential to convey this delicate
balance between the abstract and representational.
The artist received her MFA from the University of North Carolina in 1995,
and currently resides in New York City.
Public Reception Tuesday, January 10, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm; open to the
public.
