The Peter Mendenhall Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent paintings by Los Angeles-based Albert Contreras.

At age 75, Contreras continues to explore and push in his paintings the interplay of color, texture, and symmetry. Obsessive and jewel-like, the paintings blend geometric and gestural abstraction in unexpected and innovative ways. Often grouped in numbers of small panels, the works in this exhibition are generally larger, single paintings (with the exception of the conjugation of 24 small “X” paintings).

In 2005, the University of Southern California’s Fisher Art Gallery mounted a survey of his paintings, Albert Contreras: Luminous Scapes and Environments, curated by Max Schulz. His work is held in numerous private and public collections across the United States and Sweden including Brandeis University’s Rose Art Museum and Stockholm’s Modern Museum.
