The Peter Mendenhall Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Kristin Leachman. This will be Leachman’s first exhibition at the Peter Mendenhall gallery, and her first solo gallery exhibition since 2005. Nine new paintings will be featured.
In this body of work, Leachman employs her luminous and opaque braids and weaves of paint to form the physical environments of domestic interior spaces. The fragments of rooms suggest states of mind, body, and spirit in transition. Decay, rebuilding, and rebirth are conveyed through the shifting abstraction and tightening of the paint’s woven
design. The emerging spaces cover up as much as they reveal about their history and possible future. In blending human absence and presence, the works explore the deep structures and foundations of a self and its home.
In 2006, Leachman’s “House Spirits” was chosen to represent Southern California in the exhibition “From the Committees,” at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. Leachman’s works are in the collections of the San Diego Museum of Art and numerous private collections.
An opening reception at the gallery for the artist will take place on Saturday, September 12, from 6 to 8 pm. For further information please contact Peter Mendenhall at (323)936-0061.
