The Peter Mendenhall Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent paintings by Squeak Carnwath.

Carnwath is known for her distinctive and recognizable style and handling of paint that combines personal and day-to-day elements with universal or existential themes. Often the works "combine text and images on abstract fields of color to express sociopolitical and spiritual concerns.”

In the spring of this year, the Oakland Museum of California mounted a comprehensive survey of her work of the past 15 years, Squeak Carnwath: Painting Is No Ordinary Object. Curated by Karen Tsujimoto, the museum’s senior curator of art, the exhibition was accompanied by a 160-page publication under the same name with essays by Tsujimoto and art critic and poet John Yau. Co-published by Pomegranate, the book features 80 color reproductions and serves as most complete printed document of Carnwath’s painting career.

A professor of art practice at the University of California, Berkeley, Carnwath is also the recipient of many awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and two Individual Artist Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. Her work is in the permanent collections of many museums, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Yale University Art Gallery, and the Brooklyn Museum.

An opening reception at the gallery for the artist will take place on Saturday, November 21, from 6 to 8 pm. For further information please contact Peter Mendenhall at (323) 936-0061.
