The Peter Mendenhall Gallery is pleased to announce Slippery, an exhibition of sculpture by Las Vegas-based artist Wayne Littlejohn.

Littlejohn draws upon multiple sources, high and low, ancient and modern, in an effort to construct abstract objects from industrial materials and processes. These provocatively hand-crafted forms are designed to activate space and integrate with the walls, establishing a unique sense of “time” and “place.” Highchroma organic forms constructed from synthetic materials question traditional notions of nature and offer an alternative to entrenched aesthetic attitudes.

Selected exhibitions include in the 1999 “Ultralounge,” at Diverse Works, Houston, Texas, Cosmic Dermis at the Rosamund Felson Gallery in 2001, and the Navypierwalk, international large-scale sculpture exhibition in 2002 & 2003. More recently, Littlejohn was included in 2007/2008ʼs Las Vegas Diaspora, a Dave Hickey-curated exhibition at the Las Vegas Art Museum and Laguna Art Museum.

Littlejohn says of his own work: “My research occurs at the point of interface between painting and sculpture, exploring the essence of painting as object and its relationship to the intimate physical interaction observed in traditional sculpture. Over the past decade, rough deconstructed “found” objects have succumbed to provocatively handcrafted postmodern abstract forms, which provide the vehicle for investigation, creating an air of playfulness while underscoring formal, theoretical and historical content. Materials of automobile, surfer and leisure culture, inform these “natural synthetics” suggesting that beauty is inherent in the most toxic of apparitions and material desire is but an alternate route to the sublime.”
